What is blue spirulina and what are its benefits?

Blue spirulina powder definitely sounds like it is straight out of a Star Wars movie (and you can naturally color your own blue milk using this powder like the one Luke Skywalker drinks when living as a farm boy on Tatooine.)

Blue spirulina powder is made from a blue-green algae, one of the oldest life forms on earth. The Aztecs actually used it for various medicinal purposes and treating diseases. It has a slight bitter taste, so a smoothie is the perfect vessel to incorporate it’s nutrients into.

Blue spirulina powder is gluten-free, vegan, supports gut health, boosts immune system function and packed with powerful antioxidants and protein. It’s blue-green color is natural, there are no added dyes.

Can you freeze blue spirulina powder?

Yes, you can….BUT I learned an important lesson:

Notice in this photograph the shade of beautiful teal blue when I first mixed together the smoothie. I didn’t have time to photograph immediately, so I froze the mixture and when it thawed out is lost its blue tint and became more green.

After researching about why this happened, I learned that if you freeze something made with blue spirulina powder, you should consume it while frozen. Once it thaws, the cell walls rupture, causing the pigmentation to break down and the nutrition is not as high. In short, thawing frozen spirulina is not advised.

Can I make blue spirulina popsicles?

You can make your very own healthy homemade popsicles with the smoothie mixture for a cool and nourishing frozen snack or on-the-go meal

These popsicles are full of protein, healthy carbohydrates, gut healthy ingredients and more! Find BPA free popsicle baggies like the ones I used by clicking HERE.

Jedi smoothie ingredients:

  • 1 cup chopped strawberries

  • 1 cup avocado (I used frozen chunks)

  • juice from 1/2 of a large lemon

  • 1 tbsp ceremonial grade matcha powder

  • 1 tbsp raw honey (or to taste, you can use less or more if desired)

  • 1/4 cup organic pure aloe

  • 1/4 cup water or plant milk

Optional garnish: I finely chopped up grated coconut and mixed with a little blue spirulina powder and also added some sour candy belts cut very thin and curled like a worm for a fun crazy star wars food effect like you might find if eating at the Mos Eisley cantina on the planet Tatooine.

How to make a jedi smoothie

Instructions;

Add ingredients, in order, to a smoothie cup and blend using smoothie setting.

For blender: Alternatively, add all ingredients to a blender in reverse order and pulse a few times, then blend on high for at least one minute, or until smooth. Pour into serving glass, add garnish if desired, and enjoy!

Jedi mind trick: Blue or green?

Keep in mind that before I froze the smoothie mixture and let thaw that it was a beautiful shade of teal blue, but for a mind blowing jedi mind trick…freeze and thaw half of the mixture and layer in serving glass for an out-of-this-world galaxy effect!

Special thanks to my son, Ryan, for letting me use his toy figurines for the photo shot. For the starry sky effect, I poked holes in a black piece of poster board and shined a bright lamp behind.

May the force by with you!

💙Julie
