Apple Rose Puffs

I used Jazz apples, but any red apple will do, perhaps Red Delicious would give it a deeper red color. This recipe makes six large roses.

These beautiful Apple Rose Puffs would be a deliciously perfect way to brighten a loved one’s morning. Impress and surprise your mom, wife or someone special with these easy, but fanciful breakfast roses. Serve with their favorite coffee or tea and have a few fresh roses on the table for decoration and make them feel so loved. These are made with puff pastry sheets, fresh apples and I used a plant based cream cheese alternative mixed with honey, but you can use regular cream cheese or even a jam or fruit spread like apricot. Who wouldn’t want to start their day with this luscious and tasty breakfast treat?

Let’s begin!

Ingredients:

IMG_2720.jpg
  • 2 cups water

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice (about 1-2 lemons, depending on size)

  • 2 large red apples (I used Jazz, but Red Delicious or any bright red apple will do)

  • sheet puff pastry, thawed

  • Cinnamon (or cinnamon sugar) for sprinkling, roughly 1 tbsp

  • 1/4 cup cream cheese (or dairy-free alternative)

  • 1 tbsp honey

You will also need a muffin tin, sprayed with non-stick spray or brushed with butter.

Instructions:

Prepare your muffin tin by spraying with a non-stick cooking spray or brushing with butter. Preheat your oven to 375℉ / 190℃.

IMG_2735 (1).jpg

Combine the water and lemon juice in a medium saucepan.

(This will be used to keep the sliced apples fresh from browning.)

IMG_2741.jpg

Next, slice and core your apples. (keep the skin on)

This little device is a great time saver! Of course, you will need to make thinner slices after using this though.

IMG_2743 (1).jpg

Add your slices to the lemon water mixture as you go, to prevent further browning.

IMG_2747.jpg

After you are done slicing your apples,

Mix together the cream cheese (or alternative) and the honey until smooth and well incorporated.

IMG_2752.jpg

Now, lay out your thawed puff pastry sheets on a slightly floured surface.

Cut into six even strips. I purchased Pepperidge Farms puff pastry sheets and they already had a slight crease that I evenly cut on, perfect!

IMG_2762.jpg

Use a rolling pin to slightly roll and thin/stretch them out a bit more.

IMG_2765.jpg

Lightly smear the cream cheese mixture onto the top half of each pastry section.

You can also substitute the cream cheese for a jam or fruit spread to compliment the apple, like apricot preserves or orange marmalade.

IMG_2766.jpg

Next, sprinkle the cinnamon (or cinnamon sugar) over the smeared cream cheese.

IMG_2776.jpg

Make sure to pat your apple slices dry with a paper towel and then start layering on the cream cheese, as shown.

You want a little bit of each apple slice to slightly overhang off the top of the pastry sheet to give it that rose pedal effect.

IMG_2783.jpg

Fold up bottom half to top half, but leave top of apple slices exposed.

IMG_2788.jpg

Now, start at one end and carefully roll up and place into prepared muffin tin.

I wanted to experiment with different sizes…and I definitely think the large roses turned out better. The smaller ones unraveled a bit and weren’t as pretty.

Now, bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until slightly browned.

Serve warm, and for a little added sweetness sift some powdered sugar on top!

These would make a great “breakfast in bed” treat served with your loved one’s favorite tea or coffee.
