Top Things to Do in NYC

There’s no way to do it all in one trip, but here are the highlights you’ll want to consider building into your itinerary:

⚾ Watch a Baseball Game (Yankees or Mets)

If you’re a sports fan, catching a game is a must. We saw the Yankees, and it was an awesome experience, especially in the Jim Beam Suite seats. For a little extra, you get air conditioning (bless), private bathrooms, comfy seats, a private bar, and even free popcorn. Worth every penny on a hot summer day.

🌳 Visit Central Park

A peaceful green escape right in the middle of the city. You can walk, rent bikes, or even hop on a horse-drawn carriage. My personal highlights:

  • Belvedere Castle
  • The Bow Bridge
  • Central Park Zoo
  • Boathouse Café for a lakeside snack

It’s open every day from 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM, so you’ve got plenty of time to explore.

🕊 9/11 Memorial & Museum + One World Trade Center

This was one of the most emotional stops of the trip. Plan about 2–3 hours here. Afterwards, head next door to One World Observatory (Freedom Tower).

The elevator ride alone is incredible which is a 47-second digital journey showing NYC’s transformation over time. Once you reach the top (102 floors up), the 360-degree views are breathtaking.

🎥 TODAY Show at Rockefeller Plaza

If you watch the TODAY Show, this is such a cool bucket-list experience. We made signs, got to the plaza by 6:15 AM (some get there earlier!), and got a great spot. We even got to meet Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer, and took photos with them!

🏛 Visit the Oculus

Right across from the 9/11 Museum, the Oculus is a jaw-dropping architectural spot that doubles as a shopping center and transportation hub. Great for photo ops, grabbing a bite, and catching a subway.

🚤 Hudson River Boat Tour

Highly recommend! We booked with Starship Tours for a 90-minute ride that included views of:

  • Statue of Liberty
  • Ellis Island
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • Lower Manhattan skyline

They even took a professional family photo with the skyline and emailed us the download. Bonus!

🚌 Open-Top Bus Tour

Okay, I was skeptical, but this turned out to be one of my favorite things! Especially the night tour. We left from Times Square, crossed into Queens, and came back through Manhattan. Seeing the skyline lit up was seriously magical.

⛪ St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Free to enter and absolutely stunning. Located right near Rockefeller Center. If the doors are open, go in, it’s peaceful and beautiful.

🏢 Trump Tower

Love him or not, the building is worth a visit. Fancy lobby, shiny gold accents, and multiple food options:

  • Trump Cafe (pizza, quick bites)
  • Trump Grill (filet mignon, sushi, etc.)
  • Trump Sweets (desserts galore)
Also a fun photo op at the presidential plaque!

🤩 Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

This was just straight-up fun. Pose with celebrities like Taylor Swift, Abe Lincoln, and even the Avengers. There’s a 4-D Marvel movie included (yes, some water splashes). Great for all ages.

🌆 Times Square

It’s loud. It’s chaotic. It’s… Times Square. Not my favorite because of the crowds, but still a must-see at least once, especially at night when everything lights up. Great for people-watching and grabbing a bite or Broadway show.

Other Must-Sees (If You Have Time)

  • Empire State Building
  • Chelsea Market
  • The High Line trail
  • The MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
  • Grand Central Terminal
  • Broadway Show or Jimmy Fallon taping

Where to Eat in NYC

Food is one of NYC’s main attractions, and the options are endless. Here are a few we loved and recommend:

🍕 Angelo’s Coal Oven Pizza

Best pizza of the trip! We had thin crust with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, and fresh basil. Their coal-fired oven gives it that perfect crispy edge. Two locations in the city, one near Times Square.

🍰 Junior’s Restaurant & Cheesecake

Massive portions and THE BEST cheesecake. Like… don’t leave without trying it.

🎶 Ellen’s Stardust Diner

A Broadway lover’s dream. Singing waiters, dancing staff, and a super fun, high-energy vibe. The milkshakes? So good. And yes, you can request a song!

🥪 Premier Deli Café

Casual, convenient, and surprisingly spacious inside. Good for breakfast, sandwiches, and a quick bite before heading out. Located right across from our hotel.

Where to Stay in NYC

🛏 WestHouse Hotel (Our Pick)

We loved this place! Located in Midtown Manhattan, it’s walking distance from Central Park, Times Square, and several subway stations. Here’s what made it stand out:

  • Free breakfast
  • Evening tapas + desserts
  • Complimentary wine, beer, sparkling wine
  • Cookies at check-in
  • Fitness center + fast WiFi
And the staff? So helpful and friendly.

Other Hotel Options

  • New York Hilton Midtown
  • The Manhattan at Times Square
  • Park Central Hotel
  • Ritz-Carlton Central Park
  • Trump International Hotel & Tower

Wherever you stay, read the reviews and check for amenities that matter to you. Proximity to subway stations is a big win!

Getting Around NYC

Transportation in NYC can seem overwhelming at first, but once you figure it out, it’s part of the adventure!

🚗 Rideshare

Uber/Lyft are your best bets when you’re carrying luggage or arriving from the airport. We paid about $75 from LaGuardia to Midtown. It was fast, smooth, and stress-free.

🚕 Taxis

Everywhere. Easy to find. But they charge by time, not upfront like ride shares. We used taxis once and preferred Uber.

🚇 Subway

Most budget-friendly and fastest way around the city, especially during rush hour. It can seem intimidating, but here are a few tips:

  • Ask subway workers for help. They’re used to tourists!
  • Buy a MetroCard or use OMNY for tap-to-pay access.
  • Use Google Maps or the CityMapper app to navigate routes.
  • Avoid trying to swipe one card for multiple people—it won’t work.

🛥 NYC Ferry

Scenic and affordable. Check ferry.nyc or download the NYC Ferry app to buy tickets and plan your route. Great alternative to subways and cabs!

🚘 Parking in NYC

Planning to drive? Here’s your warning: parking is rough. Expensive, limited, and often not SUV/truck friendly. Garages can charge $60–$120 per day or more.

Instead, try:

  • ParkWhiz
  • SpotHero
  • BestParking
  • Parking.com
These apps help you find and reserve spots ahead of time.

Conclusion

New York City is as exciting as it is overwhelming, but with a little planning, it becomes an unforgettable experience. From towering skyscrapers to secret pizza joints, world-famous museums to lively street performers, every corner of NYC has something to offer.

Whether you’re there for a few days or more, be ready to walk, explore, and be amazed at every turn. Embrace the energy, grab a slice, hop on a subway, and let the city surprise you. Trust me, once you visit, you’ll already be planning your next trip before you even leave.
