Charleston is my ABSOLUTE favorite vacation destination. Read more to find out why I am completely in love with this city rich in history and old-world charm and why you NEED to add this to your vacation “bucket list” to visit.

Reasons to visit Charleston, SC:

CHARLESTON IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY.

I cannot stress how GORGEOUS this city is. There are beautiful details everywhere you look, from the bronze street plaques on the corner of sidewalks, to the architecture in the buildings and even the paint color on the “piazza” ceiling. What’s a piazza you may ask? It’s a fancy name for a porch of a house. Most of the one’s in historic Charleston have a separate door leading to them with a nice big sitting area looking out over a garden. (You will find that there is a unique set of vocabulary words the locals use to refer to things.) See below some of the photos showing a few of the magnificent beauty this city beholds.

Shown here is an example of a piazza, or porch, that is typical on an historic Charleston home. Piazza’s usually face towards the ocean to reap the benefits of the ocean breeze, especially before air-conditioning was available. I can imagine it was also perfect for sipping coffee or tea while watching the sunrise and also a perfect place to entertain guests with cocktails.

Notice the entry door on the side leading in and also the details on the ceiling. In Charleston, it is traditional to paint the ceiling with the color “Haint Blue” which is believed to ward off evil spirits because they are scared to cross over a body of water, (which is what that color represents.) Other colors commonly used are Robin’s Egg Blue or Turquoise Blue. It’s also said that these color hues help ward off bugs, which is definitely a plus for this tropical and humid area.

CHARLESTON IS A WALKABLE CITY.

Another great reason to visit historic Charleston is because it is very walkable. Everything is compacted into this Peninsula city. Almost any hotel you book downtown is within walking distance to restaurants, the waterfront park, pier, museums, art galleries and the marketplace and the King Street shops. However, if walking is not your thing, rest assured you can find bike taxi’s, rental bikes, take an Uber or there are several parking areas around (just make sure you are prepared to pay by credit card, cash or change if using a street meter.)

Another great way to tour historic Charleston is on a horse carriage tour. There are several available downtown, just head over to Market Street to find plenty of choices. They have several routes and the tour guides are amazing with all the information and history they tell you and BOY can they navigate the busy streets with ease. I’ve been on three different ones and it never gets old. It’s a must!

Fun fact: Bill Murray has a residence in historic Charleston and our tour guide said that he rented an entire carriage to take his visiting family on a tour. Bill is also known for crashing Charleston weddings, so you never know when you might catch a glimpse of this famous actor and comedian, most known for his roles in Ghostbusters and Caddyshack. He has also been spotted in several popular restaurants in the area and actually co-owns one named Harold’s Cabin.

When is the best time to visit Charleston, SC?

Really, anytime of year is great, but I would say Spring has been my favorite. I have been during all four seasons, so let me give you a few tips about each:

  • Spring is a wonderful time to admire all the plants and trees in full bloom and the temperature is quite perfect.

  • Summer can be brutal for outdoor walking and activities in downtown. Charleston can get rather hot and humid, so be warned to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and put on a little bug spray to protect yourself during this time of year. One big advantage is there are lots of surrounding beaches such as Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach to enjoy the summer in a refreshing way and there are still lovely flowers in bloom throughout the city.

  • Fall is the busiest time for weddings and that also means more visitors and higher rates. However, the weather is perfect for enjoying outdoor walks and activities, and the trees are starting to change colors along with houses being decorated for the season.

  • Winter months have the fewest visitors, especially January and February. Last year my husband and I decided to take a trip during the second week of December, and we were a little disappointed in the lack of Christmas decorations. So don’t expect too much razzle and dazzle in winter, but it was still a great trip full of delicious foods and sight-seeing without as many tourists, so wait times were very low.

Where to eat in Charleston

THE FOOD.

Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE food and that is another fantastic reason to visit Charleston, SC. You can find an array of seafood restaurants, pizza places, Mexican food, southern comfort meals and lots of upscale restaurants serving local delicacies. Here are a few of my favorite restaurants to visit while in Charleston:

THE HUSK. The Husk transforms southern food into a truly amazing dining experience.

This is my absolute favorite upscale Charleston restaurant. You are in for a treat if you land a reservation here. The atmosphere is welcoming and full of old-world charm with hard wood floors and fireplaces. The staff is extra attentive, and the food is a work of art, with unforgettable flavor palettes. This restaurant beckons to me on every trip!

NEED TO KNOW: The menu changes daily and you must book your reservation 3-6 weeks ahead to assure your seating. The Husk restaurant is located on Queen Street, across from The Mills in-between Meeting Street and King Street. Here is a link to their website to make a reservation: THE HUSK Trust me, you can’t go wrong with ANYTHING you order from the menu. It’s ALL good!

POOGAN’S PORCH. A fresh approach to Low Country cuisine and southern comfort food.

Poogan’s Porch is also located on Queen’s Street, right next to The Husk. It gives you the southern charm experience, like you are dining in a true Charleston home…which you kind of are! This was at one time a residence, turned into a restaurant in 1976 and was named after a beloved neighborhood dog that claimed Queen Street territory and it’s favorite resting place was…you guessed it: Poogan’s Porch! The beloved dog’s grave is actually right inside the fence next to the steps leading up to the entrance. Mornings are the busiest, so reservations are recommended, click HERE for their website.

NOTE: I would like to note that I have eaten here several times over the years and it’s been amazing. However, on our last visit we were very disappointed in the quality of food and service. I am truly hoping it was a fluke. It was after the peak of Covid when staffing and acquiring food was an issue, and hoping that is why there was a change. So, that is why I still wanted to recommend this low key and relaxing place to eat.

Magnolias. “An upscale Southern cuisine, blending traditional ingredients and cooking techniques with modern flair for artful presentations.”

Magnolias Uptown/Down South has an outstanding menu with a wonderful staff. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic yet has stately elegance and charm. There are exquisite details in the plating and flavors that transform a usually southern food into a magnificent dining experience.

Located near the Joe C. Riley Waterpark on East Bay Street. Reservations recommended, click HERE for their website.

RuRu’s Taco’s and Tequila. “Delicious Food. Authentic Atmosphere.”

If you are looking for a reasonable food choice that won’t break the bank and is a fairy quick eat, definitely check out RuRu’s Taco’s and Tequila. Their menu is full of fun choices like: “I AM McLovin” Queso, “I’m Your Wingman” Marinated Chicken Tortillas, and “You Got No Legs Lt. Dan” a vegan tofu and vegetable option. The atmosphere is upbeat and casual with an energetic staff. I would highly recommend, and usually no reservations are needed, just a short wait time. RuRu’s is located on East Bay Street near the Joe C. Riley Waterfront Park.

If you are on the KING Street side of downtown, a few other delicious Mexican food options are: El Jefe Texican Cantina and Juanita Greenberg’s Nacho Royale.

Monza. Woodfired pizza. Cool atmosphere.

If you have a craving for pizza while you’re in Charleston…I BEG you to try Monza. Don’t let the exterior fool you. Step inside to the cooler-than-ever Italian race theme interior. Oil filter can lights hang down to illuminate your meal. Look overhead to spot an engine block hanging from the ceiling and lots of vintage racing photos and memorabilia throughout.

…but “I’m steering off course”, because the real STAR of the show is their amazing wood-fired pizza. The perfect crust holds their tasty sauce and whatever toppings you desire. Don’t forget to order a Ceasar side salad to accompany it, because it’s also an excellent choice made with quality ingredients, delicious dressing and a hearty serving.

2023 UPDATE: Monza Pizza Bar has been closed indefinitely, but I’m hoping and praying that it will reopen one day! It is located at 451 King St, Charleston, SC.

Millers All Day. “Timeless food and drinks.”

What a fun atmosphere Millers All Day has. Once a drug store, now turned into a cozy diner specializing in southern foods elevated beyond expectations.

There hasn’t been one time I’ve been disappointed with this diner. Every single visit has exceeded my expectations with delight. They offer a variety of breakfast foods, along with sandwich and salad options and have delicious cocktails, coffee and tea selections as well.

They are only open: Monday - Friday 8am - 3pm and Saturday - Sunday 8am - 4pm and it located on 120 King St, (about one block past Queen St.) Expect a wait time of about 20-40 minutes any time you go, but if there is seating at the bar available, it’s first come, first serve!

Peace Pie. The Ultimate Ice Cream Sandwich.

If a “sweet tooth” craving hits, check out my husband’s favorite spot, Peace Pie. Two thick wafer-like cookies hold a hearty amount of delicious ice cream along with other flavor pops such as chocolate mousse, caramel toffee, or peanut butter chiffon. It’s a decadent treat that will satisfy your sweet cravings with delight!

Here is their website if you want to check out the unique flavor combinations they offer: PEACE PIE

Another fantastic place to get some “to-go” sweets to take home (or back to your hotel room for snacking) is: Le Macaron French Pastries which is located right next to Peace Pie. They offer a variety of freshly made macarons and fancy chocolates.

Places to stay in Charleston

Where to stay in Charleston, SC

My first trip to Charleston I did it all wrong. Always a penny pincher, trying to save money I booked a slightly cheaper hotel about 10 minutes outside of town. Although it was a very nice hotel, the money I saved in the beginning was put towards parking in the city, not to mention the time lost (and experiences) getting there and back. If I give you one piece of solid advice, it’s to spend a little extra on a hotel located in historic downtown Charleston.

When you stay downtown, you are transported back in time and fully immersed in the glory and beauty of this city. Especially when everything is so walkable, you can wake up and take a stroll down the cobblestone streets that the sunrise lights up like gold in the morning hours. Find yourself at the waterpark enjoying the fountains or sit and relax on a swing on the pier watching sailboats go by while sipping on your morning coffee.

During the day, head over to the bustling marketplace for unique crafts, clothing and food, take a horse carriage tour or check out an art gallery or museum. When the night falls, they are still excitement all around with lots of music venues, local food, and nightlife. Trust me, stay in town…historic downtown Charleston, it’s worth it!

Check out my two top choices for Charleston hotels:

French Quarter Inn. Ranked #1 in the Conde Nast Travelers reader’s choice award for the past four years.

The proof is in the pudding with this one. It’s no wonder they have won awards for the past four years and counting. Friends, if you want to be treated like royalty…stay HERE! As you pull your vehicle under the valet entrance, you are immediately greeted with a smile by helpful and attentive workers that guide you and let you know where to go.

Walk inside to see the grand spiral staircase that leads you up to the lobby (or take the elevator) and upon check-in you receive a glass of refreshing champagne and some candy to relax you after a long travel. Enter your stately room filled with elegant touches and beautiful art of local areas hangs in the room and hallways.

They offer a breakfast assortment of foods and pastries along with coffee, tea and juice to fuel your day.

For an early evening treat, don’t miss out on their wine and cheese hour. Try your favorite out of the evening’s selection and grab a plate of savory meats, delicious cheeses and fruits to accompany your sip and walk out on the terrace overlooking the marketplace and city below. Enjoy the views while you wind down after a day of sightseeing. Don’t be surprised if a waiter comes by to offer you a special tasting of something and offers to get you anything you need.

You would think that would be it for the night…but they are not even close to being finished. Enjoy being pampered more when they set out milk and a freshly baked cookie assortment during the late evening hours. (They also offer hot tea and cocoa.) AND WAIT! There’s more!! Around 9pm-10pm, they come around for a turn-down service. They knock on your door and offer you chocolates, water bottles and the next day’s forecast. What a treatment! 🤩

Take advantage of all the French Quarter Inn’s amenities, including these complimentary bikes you can check out. It was a great way to easily get around and see the city.

We rode to the nearby Joe C. Rily Waterfront Park and also the White Point Gardens on the tip of the peninsula for beautiful views. The basket on the front is great for holding your purse, phone or perhaps a special purchase you made while out-and-about.

The side entrance is beautiful in itself, a brick tunnel adorned with iron gates covered in climbing green vines leads out to Church Street where the sights and sounds of Charleston awaits you. Don’t be surprised to hear the clip clop of horseshoes and see lots of Horse Carriage tours passing by or hear the beautiful church bells ringing nearby. Smells from the nearby marketplace fill the air and is just a short walk around the corner.

You really can NOT beat this location. It’s in the heart of the city and sometimes you can get a great special or bundle package with valet parking included or a sightseeing and even dinner packages to great restaurants. Check out their website for the latest specials: FRENCH QUARTER INN I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful hotel.

The Mills House Wyndham. Affordable southern charm in the heart of Charleston.

There is much history in this hotel, replicated to its original facade of 1905, but adorned with its original detailed ironwork that was able to be salvaged.

NOTE: One great thing about staying at The Mills is there is a large parking deck behind the hotel and a ramp connects directly to a side entrance to easily unload/load your belongings. You will have to pay either by the hour or for a full day, but it’s very nice and secure. Most of the time we don’t even move our vehicle until the day we leave.

The grand entrance has elegant sitting rooms on either side with fireplaces and cozy couches.

If you are looking for a hotel that offers ballrooms for hosting wedding venues, The Mills offers several options and has a side entrance that leads to them. I witnessed several ones over the years seeing brides dropped off in style including one in a vintage Rolls Royce.

As you walk to the lobby/check-in you will overlook a beautiful outdoor garden patio area with a fountain and outdoor seating to enjoy a cocktail or meal from the hotel restaurant, The Barbadoes Room which offers fresh culinary creations with seasonal ingredients.

PLAY. What activities can you do in Charleston?

Things to do in Charleston, SC

So much to see…so little time! You definitely don’t want to cut yourself short and miss out on what all Charleston has to offer. I recommend at least three full days to soak it all in and fill your soul with all this city has to offer. Check out several of my favorite things to see and do while I’m visiting:

CHURCHES. Why is Charleston is called the Holy City?

If you’ve ever visited Charleston, you would know the answer to that question. Every corner you turn, you can either see a church or the skyline dotted with steeples. Beautiful in structure and detail in different stones, bricks, colors and religions. Charleston is home to one of the oldest congregations in the south, the Circular Congregation Church, founded by the French Huguenots and Scots Presbyterians. This city has welcomed numerous religions and is home to several historic churches.

One tip that I have for you is: if the doors are open to a church, that means you are invited in. I implore you to enter and take in the breathtaking architecture and details inside as well as the gorgeous and unique stain glass in each of them (feel free to take a seat in a pew and pray for loved ones too!) The same goes if there is an attached graveyard; if the gate is open, that means you are welcome to stroll the path and explore.

HORSE CARRIAGE TOUR.

Talk about a step back in time. Enjoy a nice Charleston day while your tour guide shows you some famous sights with the most interesting information. I have taken one on each of my visits and they never get old, I thoroughly enjoy. They have several routes throughout the city, so you might get different ones each time.

If you are coming from out of downtown, there is a large parking lot (you’ll have to pay) off of Market Street where the horse carriage tours start out at. TIP: Check GROUPON for special discounts and reviews before booking. (I have used several different companies and they have all been great, so you can’t go wrong in my book.)

Joe C. Riley Waterfront Park.

You must visit this gorgeous area of Charleston. First, take a relaxing stroll down the pier to gaze at the iconic Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge and the passing ships and sailboats. Let the ocean breeze cool you down while soaking up the sun and you even might catch a glimpse of a pelican, egret or some dolphins.

Pineapple Fountain.

The Joe C. Riley waterfront park is also home to the famous Pineapple Fountain which is VERY special to me. My husband proposed to be there, then we got married there a year later. It’s magical day or night and we’ve met some great people there over the years, some of which have similar stories of love at this fountain.

Rent a bike.

One of the most efficient and fun ways to see Charleston is on bike. There are several places that offer them for rent or check with your hotel to see if they have a complimentary bike service. This photo of me riding at the waterfront park at sunrise was taken by my mom.

Art.

There are several wonderful art galleries in Charleston. This unique one featured an outdoors walk-through art exhibit. (Isn’t my mom lovely and in her happy place surrounded by all the artwork❤️)

White Point Gardens.

White Point Gardens is a lovely area at the tip of the peninsula filled with old trees, flowers, statues, a gazebo perfect for family photos along with ocean breezes and charming surrounding historic homes.

Note: If you are thinking about getting married in Charleston, lots of people book the gazebo for a small wedding ceremony. Check with your officiant on available dates and times.

Walk-a-bout.

Just walking about historic Charleston is a treat for the eyes, filled with charming details around every corner. Cobblestone streets filled with character and alleyways like this Philadelphia Alley dating back to 1776. Walk halfway through to find a special plaque with the history on this hidden treasure.

Tours.

While you are on your “walk-a-bout”, you might run into this famous little pink house on 17 Chalmers Street. There is much history behind this 1,007 sq ft house and I suggest booking a tour to learn more about interesting treasures like this.

For the best tours, use BULLDOG tours. We’ve use them a few times for ghost tours, and they were outstanding. They offer ghost, food and historical tours.

Museums and Historical Sites and Homes in Charleston, SC.

There are lots of museums and historical sites and homes to visit. Some tours are even for free, like the Dock Street Theatre. Step inside and relive what theatre life was like in the old days. There are several rooms filled with period antiques and the box office stand still looks the same. Even the outside is filled with beautiful details.

For those that want the full experience, check out their schedule HERE and pay to see a live show.

The Heyward-Washington House is another amazing step back in time.

This townhouse was constructed in the 1770’s and hosted President George Washington during a tour of the city in 1791. Find out interesting details from your tour guides as they take you around this house filled with an abundance of history. There are many original artifacts and antiques from this house on display and don’t be afraid to ask questions, the staff is more than happy to give you an answer.

There is also a lovely garden area out back of the Heyward-Washington House where the tour begins. Don’t miss out on all the details and rich history of this house which was the first historical home open to the public in Charleston, SC.

Shopping

The Charleston City Market.

The Charleston City Market is located in the heart of downtown Charleston along Market Street, yet faces Meeting Street, (it’s official address.) If offers a variety of art, crafts, handmade items, clothing, books, foods and more. All from local venders and very unique from your typical souvenir shop. It is open daily from 9:30am-6:00pm.

For more information, check out their website HERE.

Sewing Down South

Are you a Southern Charm fan? If so, you know the handsome and talented Bravo reality show star, Craig Conover. Despite all the critics early on, Craig followed his heart and opened Sewing Down South, located at 493 King St, Charleston, SC (along with a few partners.)

This beautiful store is packed with tasteful and stylish collections of home decor, pillows, clothing, hats, accessories for your beloved pet and more! Check out the online store store by clicking HERE. Craig also has a book called Pillow Talk: What's Wrong with My Sewing? that dives into the beginnings and struggles that motivated him to turn his passion into success.

On a personal note, I recently met Craig at a Home Show in Charlotte, NC at a fireside chat session. He is such a down-to-earth guy with a heart of gold and a million-dollar smile! He is intriguing, encouraging, and inspiring and exudes happiness for doing what he loves. Exciting NEWS: Craig hinted that he is expanding his career and was cast in a movie releasing in 2024.

Sites

Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge.

What an iconic bridge and makes for a picturesque skyline. I would suggest a car ride over the bridge and stop below for a walk in the park and also a walking and bike riding area is provided along the entire length of the bridge for some great exercising or just to take in the city of Charleston from another view. It gets quite windy up on the bridge, so I suggest taking a light jacket, even on a mild day.

Rainbow Row.

One of the most photographed areas in Charleston, SC is Rainbow Row, a group of pastel-colored houses that line East Bay Street (79-107 to be exact.) No doubt, on your trip to Charleston you will repeatedly see artwork showing these famous houses.

NOTE: It’s very hard to capture a nice photo of the complete houses without getting cars and people in the picture, so if you are a big fan, I would suggest heading over to the City Market to purchase one of many offered.

Window Flower Boxes.

Yes. This is a thing in Charleston…and very amazing thing! Window flower boxes are in abundance in Charleston and adorn most houses like colorful jewels. Each one is unique and overflowing with gorgeous seasonal flowers. It’s worth a walk all-around the area just to capture and behold their beauty. The owners take much care and pride in their upkeep and changing them out with the seasons.

Angel Oak.

The Angel Oak tree is located in Angel Oak Park on John’s Island, a short drive outside of Charleston. It’s such a majestic sight to see this 400-500 year old tree with long winding branches reaching out all around. There is a reason it’s called “The most beautiful tree in the world” It’s breathtaking in every way and you can just imagine the historical secrets it holds and has seen over the years,

Get there early for great photo lighting and no as many visitors. NOTE: There are some barriers preventing you from getting near the base of the tree (for it’s protection.) However, you are still able to lean up against or pose on some of the large branches. There is limited parking on a long dirt road, so another great reason to beat the crowd! Click HERE for more information like hours and address.

Folly Beach.

After a trip to the Angel Oak tree, head over to nearby Folly Beach, SC. The crisp ocean breeze and sun will renew your soul and energize you. There are several great shops and local restaurants to explore in the area as well. Catch a glimpse of some surfers, build a sandcastle or hunt for seashells.

Seashell Hunt.

Folly Beach is well-known for its abundance of seashells. Shown in the photo was a few of the unique ones I found in just 10 minutes of walking the shoreline. There have been several people over the years that have found very old shark teeth, and some even finding a rare megalodon tooth. The best time to hunt for shells and shark teeth are at low tide.

I’m hoping that I’ve convinced you to visit my favorite vacation destination, Charleston, South Carolina. There is so much more this city has to offer that I can’t fit into this article but trust me…it’s worth the trip!

A final caution if you do visit: A curious group of Guinea Gang Fowl roam the streets “South of Broad”, and I’ve ran into them twice. The first time was VERY unexpected, and they scared the crap out of me. Since they are not indigenous to this area, I had to Google about them and why they were here. I found out that a couple of them mysteriously showed up about 20 years ago (possibly as a prank intended for someone in the area) and their “gang” grows larger each year. I counted eight last time I saw them but might have been a few astray that I missed. They are not bashful and will try to run you off, so beware!

If you aren’t able to make the trip, I’ve re-created a few vintage Charleston recipes from a Charleston Receipts cookbook I got from the City Marketplace on my last visit. You can have a little taste of low country right in your home. Try them out:

Vintage Charleston Recipes (or as they once were called, “receipts”)

This recipe is by Mrs. Thomas N. Carruthers (Ellen Douglas Everett)

Recipe by Mrs. Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. (Elizabeth Cauthen)

Enjoy!

💜Julie

You never know what you’ll see on the streets in Charleston. There are lots of beautiful vintage cars like this one roaming around, so have your camera ready!
