Blue spirulina inspiration

Blue spirulina powder is becoming more and more popular and easier to find. You can purchase it either in the store or online (find on Amazon HERE). The first time I saw it was on Instagram (follow at @inspirationapron) and was blown away with how lovely the color is, but more importantly the nutritional benefits are out-of-this world AMAZING! 🚀 No really, it was first used by astronauts during space missions to the moon. NASA discovered it supports a healthy immune system and had anti-inflammatory properties and decided to add blue spirulina as a supplement to the astronaut’s diets. It also contains antioxidants and there is also evidence of helping with allergies (histamine properties.) Makes approximately 18 ounces.

What is blue spirulina and where does is come from?

Blue spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in large outdoor ponds with extremely high PH levels. It has to be an ideal sunny climate and is cultivated in only a places such as United States, Japan, Greece, India and Spain.

Who should avoid blue spirulina?

Always consult with your physician before introducing a new supplement into your diet. If you have an autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, you should avoid spirulina because studies have been shown it could possibly stimulate your immune system and make your condition worse. Excessive consumption should be avoided, especially for people with asthma and anemia. Also check with your doctor about any possible drug interactions from medication you take regularly.

Does blue spirulina make my smoothie taste fishy?

Absolutely not! At least not the brand that I use, Vulsa Botanicals. This smoothie is very delicious and creamy.

The sun was going in and out on me during the photo shoot of this smoothie, and made a difference on what the shade of blue looked like. Here you can see it’s more vibrant and has a teal-ish hue because the sun was bright, but below you can see that when I didn’t have a lot of sunlight, it lacked color. I can imagine it has something to do with it being a plant/algae and the photosynthesis properties? I don’t know, I’m not a plant genius, but I do know that this smoothie sure is delicious and lovely!

Smoothie bowl toppings ideas

You can also make a spoon worthy blue smoothie bowl. Add some of your favorite toppings with could include: fresh fruit, flax seed, coconut, chai seeds, cocoa nibs, nuts, or granola (my favorite for a crunch factor!)What toppings would you add? Comment below!!
