Pumpkin Spice Latte

Dairy-Free / Vegan

Pumpkin Spice Latte or “PSL”. Some of you cringe at those words, and some of you swoon with excitement to them. Whether you’re a fan or not, we have all experienced the buzz around this wildly popular fall drink that all started with a well-known coffee company back in 2003. If you’ve never heard the story about how it all started, (or I should say it almost never started) it’s pretty darn interesting…you should give a “google search” and check it out.

I’m definitely a huge fan of this seasonal beverage with all the traditional autumn spices in a hot cozy cup of coffee and frothy milk. However, I’m not a big fan of how expensive a store-bought cup is …and just what exactly do they put in it? I’m all about saving a buck, saving time and knowing what exactly I’m putting in my body. So, that’s when I decided to make a dairy-free and naturally sweetened version of the delightful Pumpkin Spice Latte. All you need is a jar, (or container with tightly fitting lid) a microwave and five simple ingredients. This recipe yields one 12oz serving (aka: a TALL size) and only takes a few minutes to come together.

Let’s begin!

Ingredients:

  • Mason Jar or container with tight fitting lid

  • 8-10oz hot brewed coffee

  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup

  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin spice

  • 1 tbsp pumpkin puree

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or plant-based milk)

Note: This recipe is easily adaptable to your taste. If you want to reduce the amount of pumpkin spice used to your liking or reduce or increase maple syrup amount to sweetness desired, you can do so if you choose.

Add milk, then secure lid and shake vigorously until well blended and frothy.

Remove lid, then microwave for 40-60 seconds or until hot.

Pour into mug, glass or to-go cup and drink as is…

…or, add a dollop of dairy-free whipped topping and a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon on top and enjoy!

Now wasn’t that easy! ….and a lot cheaper …and saved you a trip through the long lines at the fancy coffee shop.😉

How much money can I save making my own PSL?

Just in case you were curious, (because I was) I added up the costs of my latte per 12oz serving:

Initial cost for all ingredients as a whole: $16.50 (which is a little more than the cost of buying three “Tall” latte’s from you know where. “Their” average price on a 12oz Tall latte is $4.25. The cost of each of my cups is roughly $1.10 each (I figured high) and you can get a lot more servings from your initial cost of ingredients, so in the long run…you save a BUNCH of money!

Enjoy!
