Fresh Mint Tea

Talk about a great summertime “sipping on the porch” tea! This Fresh Mint Tea recipe comes from my mother, who loves all things nature and natural.♥ After a recent visit with my parents, she offered me some of her home made mint iced tea and it was absolutely delicious, and of course…I had to have the recipe. We took a walk out to her garden and picked a fresh bunch of mint. The mint plants were sprinkled amongst garden floor, next to the towering sunflowers, full of bumble bees buzzing around, (only worried about collecting their quota of pollen and nectar for the day.)

Next, we headed over to another garden, filled with different flowers, and a small Japanese Maple (Viridis variety), that my son and I planted and grew together from a small 12 inch sapling. (now over 4 feet!) There, we would find her fresh basil. Just a snippet was all we needed for a slight flavorful twist in the tea. You can play around with the amounts to your liking, use more mint for a stronger flavor, or more honey for a sweeter tea.

FUN FACTS about FRESH MINT: (Just in case you needed a few more reasons to drink Fresh Mint Tea)

  1. Fresh mint aids in digestion and helps prevent IBS symptoms.

  2. Fresh mint improves dental health with it’s antiseptic properties and antimicrobial compound prevents bacteria that causes tooth decay and bad breath.

  3. Fresh mint has been found to aid in weight loss. It activates your digestive enzymes to absorb nutrients from food and convert them into energy, stimulating fat digestion.

  4. Fresh mint naturally relieves nausea, and headache and also has cooling properties to help dissipate the heat caused by a fever.

  5. This fact is for pregnant women only!! The International Breastfeeding Journal reported that women who often drink mint tea or mint-infused water have lesser risks in developing areola cracks. Better yet, studies have shown that mint digested in babies through breast milk soothes colic and helps prevent gas. I seriously wish I would have known this BEFORE trying to breast feed my son. I was a mess as a first time mom and never even expected painful, cracked nipples. Then on top of everything, a colicky baby, trying to sooth as best I can, while getting very little sleep. (…but let me be clear, SO WORTH IT…and we both survived😉 I love you son!)

Rinse mint off under cold water and set aside.

(Fresh plants do have bugs from time to time, and I found one during the process.)

IMG_4761 (2).jpg

Add water and honey to a 2-3 quart sauce pot.

Bring to boil, stir and remove from heat.

Add fresh mint and basil (if using) and let steep for 15-20 minutes.

I used a colander pot, but if you do not have one, just add mint and basil, then strain afterwards.

After steeping is done, strain or remove colander pot. Then taste and add more honey to liking.

Transfer to a pitcher, add ice and store in fridge. Serve over ice, garnish with fresh mint, if desired and enjoy this truly southern, fresh from garden tea!

Feel free to muddle a little extra mint and add before serving. No muddle tool? No worries, use a meat mallet after chopping.
