These Seven Layer Bars (sometimes called Granny Squares) are effortless thrown together for a quick and easy delicious dessert. Layers of chocolate and butterscotch chips, along with coconut and pecans are toasted in sweetened condensed milk on top of a graham cracker crust. These delectable bars have been requested many times over the years from my friends and family and are great for the holidays or anytime for a sweet treat. They can easily be made dairy-free and vegan by substituting for plant butter, dairy-free chocolate chips and coconut sweetened condensed milk.

Let’s begin!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips

  • 1/2 cup butterscotch chips

  • 1 1/2 cup unsweetened flaked coconut

  • 14oz can sweetened condensed milk

(NOTE: These can easily be made dairy-free and vegan by substituting for plant butter, dairy-free chocolate chips and coconut sweetened condensed milk.)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350℉ / 176℃ and get out a 9x13 cake pan.

While oven is preheating, add stick of butter to pan and place in oven to melt.

When butter is fully melted, remove pan and add graham cracker crumbs. Mix together to coat with butter, then spread and pat down to cover bottom of pan from edge-to-edge.

Sprinkle pecans evenly over graham crackers.

Then evenly sprinkle chocolate and butterscotch chips on top.

Next, sprinkle flaked coconut on top evenly.

The last layer to add is the sweetened condensed milk. Pour or spoon milk evenly on top.

Bake for 22-28 minutes or until coconut is golden brown.

Let set on cooling rack for 5-10 minutes, then use a knife to go around edges to loosen. Let cool another 15-20 minutes before cutting into squares. (Using a pizza cutter works great.)

Do 7 layer bars need to be refrigerated?

No, 7 layer bars (also called grannie squares or magic bars) are safe to store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days. You may refrigerate if you desire a less gooey, chilled bar, but there is nothing in them that requires refrigeration after baking.

Enjoy!
