Peanut Butter Flax Seed Dog Treats

Dogs are a special part of many people’s lives, and make their family feel complete. They show us unconditional love and bring us joy, excitement, protection and lots of memories. Show your fur baby some extra love by making them homemade Peanut Butter Flax Seed Dog Treats. These treats are full of healthy and hearty ingredients such as peanut butter, whole grain wheat, applesauce, flax seeds and coconut oil.

Flaxseeds contain Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, which is beneficial to improving your dog’s coat and skin. Coconut oil is also beneficial to a dog’s coat along with relieving allergies and itchy skin, improve digestion and increasing energy levels.(ref)

These treats are made almost exactly like roll-out cookies, so I ordered some inexpensive dog bone cookie cutters from Amazon. If you want to order the same ones, click HERE to check them out. The pack I ordered included three sizes and I was very happy with the results and ease of use, I would highly recommend them.

(Note: Please check with your dog’s vet before making any changes to their diet. Foods that are known to be toxic and should never be given to your dog include: Chocolate, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, onions, avocados, alcohol, coffee or artificial sweeteners, including Xylitol.)

Let’s begin!

Ingredients:

2 cups whole grain whole wheat flour1/2 cup creamy natural peanut butter (Note: check label and make sure it does not contain Xylitol, an artificial sweeter that is harmful for dogs)2 large eggs1 tbsp milled flax seeds2 tsp applesauce1 tsp coconut oil1/4 cup beef or chicken stock (reduced sodium and with no MSG added)

How to make homemade dog treats

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 325℉ / 162℃ and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Add all ingredients to a large bowl, except broth.Stir and combine well to make a thick, crumbly dough.
Add broth, one tablespoon at a time, till the correct consistency of dough is achieved.
Wrap dough in plastic wrap and place in freezer for 5 minutes to chill and make it easier to work with.While dough is chilling, prepare a clean surface by lightly flouring and also flour your rolling pin and shape cutters.
Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick and use cutter to cut out shapes.Place shapes on parchment lined baking sheet about 1/2 inch or less apart. (They will not spread much.)
For a little added “flare” you can use a toothpick to make three small holes in the middle of the bone shape…just for fun!This is a great touch, especially if you are making these to gift.

Bake at 325℉ / 162℃ Baking times: For small size, 20-25 minutes. For medium size, bake 25-30 minutes. For large size, bake 30-35 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool on pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack or wax paper to cool completely.

Discard parchment paper, then return treats back to baking sheet and place in oven for at least 4-5 hours to completely dry out. This process will extend the shelf life.

How long do homemade dog treats last?

Store in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks. You can freeze extra for up to 6-8 months. Depending on size made, this recipe will make 30-50 treats. I was able to make 50 treats with the small dog bone cutter.

This is me, holding our beloved Dalmatian Luke when I was 16 (hence the 90’s wind breaker outfit.) He was such a great companion, always up for a car trip to Pilot Mountain for a good hike. Even though Luke was full of energy, he was the easiest dog to train. Very disciplined, obedient, protective and full of love and dog kisses! (…and I swear sometimes he said “I WUV YOU” in a moaning dog talk❤)
